Interactive access and management for four-dimensional environmental data sets using McIDAS
Significant accomplishments in the past year are presented and include the following: (1) enhancements to VIS-5D; (2) Implementation of the VIS AD System; and (3) numerical modeling applications. Focus of current research and plans for next year in the following areas are briefly discussed: (1) continued development and application of the VIS-AD system; (2) further enhancements to VIS-5D; and (3) plans for modeling applications

Effect of Spring And Winter Temperatures on Winter Moth (Geometridae: Lepidoptera) Larval Eclosion in New England
Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to elucidate various factors influencing the temperature-dependent larval eclosion of winter moth, Operophtera brumata L, in New England. We found no difference in duration of the embryonic stage of eggs reared from larvae collected in Massachusetts (MA) and on Vancouver Island, British Columbia (BC), where winter temperatures are rarely below freezing. The number of growing degree days (GDD) required for larval eclosion declined with the number of days chilled in the laboratory and number of days below freezing in the field, confirming the findings of previous studies. Thus, eggs hatched with fewer GDD, when the spring came later than usual. Date of oviposition had no effect on date of hatch. Eggs laid by naturally occurring (feral) females hatched sooner with lower GDD than eggs from laboratory-reared females from MA and BC held on the same trees over the winter. South-facing eggs on the stems of trees hatched on average 1.6 days sooner than north-facing eggs. Growing degree days calculated from bi-hourly measures of temperature were 15% greater than GDD estimates based on the average of daily maximum and minimum temperatures, as used by many GDD estimates made for online sources. Over two years, the mean GDD in ⁰C for hatch of feral eggs based on bihourly temperature measurements, a 1 Jan start date and a 3.9⁰C developmental threshold was 176.53 ± 6.35S
Management and display of four-dimensional environmental data sets using McIDAS
Over the past four years, great strides have been made in the areas of data management and display of 4-D meteorological data sets. A survey was conducted of available and planned 4-D meteorological data sources. The data types were evaluated for their impact on the data management and display system. The requirements were analyzed for data base management generated by the 4-D data display system. The suitability of the existing data base management procedures and file structure were evaluated in light of the new requirements. Where needed, new data base management tools and file procedures were designed and implemented. The quality of the basic 4-D data sets was assured. The interpolation and extrapolation techniques of the 4-D data were investigated. The 4-D data from various sources were combined to make a uniform and consistent data set for display purposes. Data display software was designed to create abstract line graphic 3-D displays. Realistic shaded 3-D displays were created. Animation routines for these displays were developed in order to produce a dynamic 4-D presentation. A prototype dynamic color stereo workstation was implemented. A computer functional design specification was produced based on interactive studies and user feedback
Visual discomfort and blur
Certain visual stimuli, such as striped patterns and filtered noise, have been reported to be uncomfortable. Some filtered noise patterns judged as uncomfortable are those with a relative decrease in contrast amplitude at high spatial frequencies, compared with the statistics typical of natural images. Decreased amplitude at high spatial frequencies is a characteristic often associated with perceived blur. Additionally, the distribution of contrast across spatial frequencies also provides a cue for the accommodation (focusing) response. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between excess low spatial frequency information, discomfort judgments and perceived blur. Results of these experiments show that a relative reduction in high spatial frequency contrast results in both increased discomfort and perceived blur. This is both in artificial and natural stimuli. A possible explanation for this relationship based on accommodation responses is proposed. © 2013 ARVO
Friction plug welding
Friction plug welding (FPW) usage is advantageous for friction stir welding (FSW) hole close-outs and weld repairs in 2195 Al--Cu--Li fusion or friction stir welds. Current fusion welding methods of Al--Cu--Li have produced welds containing varied defects. These areas are found by non-destructive examination both after welding and after proof testing. Current techniques for repairing typically small (<0.25) defects weaken the weldment, rely heavily on welders' skill, and are costly. Friction plug welding repairs increase strength, ductility and resistance to cracking over initial weld quality, without requiring much time or operator skill. Friction plug welding while pulling the plug is advantageous because all hardware for performing the weld can be placed on one side of the workpiece
Evaluation of the accuracy of the Leap Motion controller for measurements of grip aperture
The Leap Motion controller allows for a mouse-free alternative to general computing. With 200 frames/second infrared cameras, a 150 field of view and an 8 ft2 umbrella of interactive space, the Leap Motion has many potential practical applications. The device is advertised as aiming to be placed in new cars, laptops and hospitals, for example, to provide contact-free device control, while reducing the need for attentive button pressing and averting eye focus
The HI content of extremely metal-deficient blue compact dwarf galaxies
We have obtained new HI observations with the 100m Green Bank Telescope (GBT)
for a sample of 29 extremely metal-deficient star-forming Blue Compact Dwarf
(BCD) galaxies, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectral data base
to be extremely metal-deficient (12+logO/H<7.6). Neutral hydrogen was detected
in 28 galaxies, a 97% detection rate. Combining the HI data with SDSS optical
spectra for the BCD sample and adding complementary galaxy samples from the
literature to extend the metallicity and mass ranges, we have studied how the
HI content of a galaxy varies with various global galaxian properties. There is
a clear trend of increasing gas mass fraction with decreasing metallicity, mass
and luminosity. We obtain the relation M(HI)/L(g)~L(g)^{-0.3}, in agreement
with previous studies based on samples with a smaller luminosity range. The
median gas mass fraction f(gas) for the GBT sample is equal to 0.94 while the
mean gas mass fraction is 0.90+/-0.15, with a lower limit of ~0.65. The HI
depletion time is independent of metallicity, with a large scatter around the
median value of 3.4 Gyr. The ratio of the baryonic mass to the dynamical mass
of the metal-deficient BCDs varies from 0.05 to 0.80, with a median value of
~0.2. About 65% of the BCDs in our sample have an effective yield larger than
the true yield, implying that the neutral gas envelope in BCDs is more
metal-deficient by a factor of 1.5-20, as compared to the ionized gas.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
